Biography:
My name is Allyson Moorer and I have been teaching in the Charleston County School District for 20 years. I am a native of Charleston, SC and come from a family of educators. I graduated from the College of Charleston in 1993 with a degree in Special Education. I currently work on the CCSD Preschool Child Find Team evaluating children ages 3-5 for special education services. I have also worked in ALL the elementary schools in District Four as a Preschool Special Education Itinerant Teacher working with CD and Kindergarten students in their general education classrooms. I absolutely love what I do! I have been married to my wonderful husband for 18 years and we have a son and a daughter. My husband is also a teacher at Stratford High School in Berkeley County. My children attend public school in Dorchester County so we are a tri-county family! My family loves the beach and we spend a week on Pawley's Island every summer. In my spare time, I love to read and play cards and board games.

Classroom Connections:
I am excited about using the Movie Maker program with my students. I think this program would be perfect for teaching classroom rules and procedures, social skills, and introducing new units of study to my preschool students. I could take pictures of my students demonstrating the classroom rules and procedures and make a short movie to share with their parents during open house. I could also video short segments of my students role playing different social situations and put them together to teach our social skills curriculum. Movie Maker would be perfect for introducing units of study (i.e. All About Me) or field trips. For my students with special needs, I could create social stories to help them through difficult activities or transitions within the daily routine at school or at home.

Date: 02/19/2013
Content Area: Writing/Oral Language Expression
Grade Level: Kindergarten

  1. List the South Carolina curriculum standard(s) supported through this activity.

KINDERGARTEN
WRITING
Developing Written Communications
Standard K-4 The student will begin to create written work that has a clear focus, sufficient detail, coherent organization, effective use of voice, and correct use of the conventions of written Standard American English.
ORAL LANGUAGE EXPRESSION
K-4.1 Generate ideas for writing by using techniques (for example, participating in conversations and looking at pictures).
K-4.2 Generate complete sentences orally.
EARLY WRITING DEVELOPMENT
K-4.3 Use pictures, letters, or words to tell a story from beginning to end.

2. Write A Focused Learning Statement.
Students will use pictures/drawings and complete sentences to create an “All About Me” digital story to present to the class.

3. Briefly describe the activity and explain how it addresses higher level thinking.

The students will discuss their pictures or drawings and answer questions to help generate ideas about their story. The students will understand that a story is someone’s thoughts written down. The students will organize their pictures or drawings on a story board to help them create a story that follows a logical sequence. The students will present their digital stories to the class using complete sentences.
4. Briefly explain what the students will do in this lesson (this is a hands-on activity).

1. Students will bring in 5 pictures or drawings that represent them (i.e. student, family members, favorite place, favorite thing, and favorite activity).
2. Students will generate ideas for writing by describing their pictures to the teacher and answering questions.

3. Students will organize pictures or drawings on a story board.

4. Students will dictate to the teacher a description of each picture using complete sentences.

5. Students will input their pictures, drawings and dictation into the Movie Maker program with individual assistance from the teacher.

6. Students will present their digital stories to the class using complete sentences.

6. Name, or briefly describe, the differentiation strategy and explain how this lesson is used as a component in differentiated instruction in your classroom.

Digital storytelling is an alternative to traditional writing activities in kindergarten (i.e. journal writing or guided group writing). Based on levels of performance, the students will dictate their story to the teacher, write single words to label pictures in their story, or write full sentences independently. Students with IEP's or 504 plans will by accommodated according to their plans.
